Sendai, the City of Trees, is an area where nature and the city are united. There are various sightseeing spots related to Date Masamune, but this time we will introduce the standard sightseeing spots in Sendai city.

Sendai Castle Ruins

Sendai Castle Ruins Sendai Castle Ruins is a must-see sightseeing spot in Sendai. The Sendai Castle (Aoba Castle), the residence of Date 620,000 goku, is said to have dared not to build a castle tower in order to avoid the vigilance of Tokugawa Ieyasu. The ruins of Sendai Castle are well known for the statue of Lord Date Masamune mounted on his horse, but because it is located at a high elevation within Sendai City, it is a pleasant spot to view the city from the same vantage point as Lord Masamune.

The area around the ruins of the castle is Aobayama Park, and from the ruins of the main citadel you can see the entire city of Sendai and the Pacific Ocean.

Due to the earthquake that struck off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture on March 16, 2022, the equestrian statue of Masamune Date is covered by a sheet and cannot be seen because it is undergoing restoration.

Sendai Castle Ruins Zuihouden

The Zuihouden, the mausoleum of Date Masamune, is a gorgeous mausoleum building that conveys the style of the Momoyama period (1568-1600). The current building was reconstructed in 1979. The temple is especially impressive in early summer when the leaves are freshly green and in autumn when the leaves turn red, and the glittering decorations are breathtaking. Twice a year, in summer and fall, the main hall of the shrine is opened to the public, and visitors can see a precious statue of Masamune.

The temple also houses the mausoleums of the second and third lords Tadamune and Tsunamune, as well as a museum.

National Treasure Osaki Hachimangu Shrine

The shrine was founded in 1607 by feudal lord Date Masamune. Typical of the Gongen-zukuri style, it is decorated both inside and out with various carvings and metal fittings, and offers a glimpse of the splendid Momoyama-era architecture and culture of the Momoyama period. The long floor is designated as a national important cultural property, and the stone torii gate is designated as a prefectural important cultural property.

The shrine is revered as a god of good fortune, protection from bad luck, victory, and safe delivery.
The shrine is also known as the "Shrine of the Gods of the World".

Mitakisan Fudoin

The "Sendai Shiro", the god of business, is enshrined at this Fudo-san located in the "Chris Road Shopping Street" in the center of the city. In an effort to take advantage of this blessing, you will often see pictures and figurines of Sendai Shiro displayed in restaurants and souvenir stores in Sendai City. Sendai Shiro goods are also sold, and are recommended as souvenirs for good luck.

Sendai City Jozenji-dori 

Jozenji-dori is the symbolic road of Sendai City. Surrounded by rows of zelkova trees, the promenade offers a stroll through fresh greenery, autumn leaves, and other seasonal charms. Various events are held throughout the four seasons, but the most famous is the "SENDAI Pageant of Light" illumination in winter. Hundreds of thousands of LED bulbs are installed along the zelkova trees, enveloping the street in warm light. Other events are held throughout the year, including the Aoba Festival in the spring and the Jazz Festival in the fall.

The eye-catching glass-walled building facing Jozenji-dori is Sendai Mediatheque. It is a public complex with a variety of functions, including a gallery, library, and video center.

Sendai Morning Market 

"Kitchen in Sendai" Sendai Morning Market is a shopping district with abundant fresh ingredients from the local Miyagi prefecture. Its history began in 1945, shortly after the war, and even with the progress of urbanization in front of the station, the scenery of the old morning market remains unchanged. Approximately 60 stores line up, including fresh seafood off Sanriku, Sendai brand fruits and vegetables, and Sendai's specialty kamaboko. Even though it is a morning market, the shop is open until the evening, so you can enjoy shopping slowly.
